Pointe Shoe Gown

This dress was originally fashioned for a one of a kind fashion show here in Columbia called Runaway Runway. The concept is to turn trash into treasure – to create a wearable fashion piece that uses only end of life cycle materials. Being immersed in the ballet world for so long, my immediate concept was pointe shoes. Professional ballet dancers go through sometimes hundreds of pairs a year, and the dead ones just go straight into the trash. Until now.

After numerous hours of razor blading satin off the outside of the shoes, cleaning each piece, and organizing them by shade of pink, the real fun began – assembling them all.

The gown has since been borrowed for a wedding, used for veil designers fashion shoots, and worn to a fundraiser gala for the Charlotte Ballet in North Carolina.
